What is Grok memory?

It is available across multiple tiers, including a free plan, X Premium subscriptions, and higher-tier plans like SuperGrok and enterprise offerings. The product has grown quickly since its launch, and xAI has invested heavily in the infrastructure behind it.
xAI launched persistent memory for Grok in April 2025. This means Grok can remember details from past conversations and carry that context forward into future sessions. Tell Grok your role, your preferences, or what you are working on, and it remembers for all future conversations. Memories are transparent. You can see exactly what Grok knows about you and choose what to forget.
Memory is enabled by default and available on grok.com and the Grok iOS and Android apps, though not currently available in some regions, including parts of the EU and UK. You can manage it from Settings, Data Controls, Memory. Unlike ChatGPT, which has a separate custom instructions field, Grok uses its memory system to handle personalization. You tell it what to remember directly in conversation, and individual memories can be deleted from the chat interface. If you ask Grok what people are saying about a topic today, it can pull from live data in ways that other models cannot always match.
SuperGrok for complex queries. The SuperGrok tier includes features like DeepSearch and higher-compute reasoning modes, which are designed for more involved research and reasoning tasks. DeepSearch pulls from multiple sources to synthesize comprehensive answers. Higher-compute modes allocate more resources to complex problems. These features represent a genuine step up from the base Grok experience and compete well with premium tiers from other providers.
Business and Enterprise data policies. For organizations, Grok Business and Enterprise plans do not train on your data by default. This is an important distinction for teams that need to discuss proprietary information with an AI assistant without worrying about that data being used to improve the underlying model.
Grok is a capable AI assistant with a distinct personality and some genuine differentiators. The question is not whether Grok is good at what it does. It is whether its still-evolving memory system is enough to support long-term, context-rich workflows.
The limitations of Grok memory
Grok's memory is a welcome addition, but it is still newer and less mature than what ChatGPT and Claude offer. Like most AI systems today, Grok's memory feels more complete than it actually is. It stores selected facts, not a continuous, reliable history of your interactions. There are several areas where the current implementation falls short.
Memory is still basic and inconsistent. Grok remembers facts about you across sessions, but it does not offer the same depth or reliability as ChatGPT or Claude. Users report that memory behavior can be inconsistent across web, iOS, and Android, with persistent memory sometimes failing to carry context forward between conversations. There is no project-based memory separation, no auto-summarization of conversations, and no structured memory management beyond viewing and deleting individual items. The feature exists, but it is a first generation implementation that does not always work as expected.
Not currently available in some regions. Due to regulatory constraints, Grok's memory feature is not currently available in some regions, including parts of the EU and UK. Deleted conversations are queued for removal. When you delete a conversation in Grok, it is queued for deletion within 30 days. This is a reasonable timeline, though it means your data persists on xAI's servers for up to a month after you choose to remove it.
Regulatory requirements may apply. In some jurisdictions, regulatory requirements may affect how long certain data must be retained. This is not unique to xAI, but it means that data deletion timelines may vary depending on where you are located.
No dedicated private or incognito mode. Grok does not currently offer a clearly defined temporary or incognito chat mode comparable to what some competitors provide. Every conversation follows the same data handling policies for your plan tier.
For users who are deliberate about data privacy, the business tiers offer reasonable protections. For users on consumer plans, it is worth understanding that your conversations may contribute to future model development.
Export and portability
Portability is one of the most important and most overlooked aspects of choosing an AI platform. The question is simple: if you decide to leave, can you take your data with you?
Data export is available. Grok offers a data export through Settings, Data, Export Data, or through the xAI account portal at accounts.x.ai/data. You can download your full conversation history as a ZIP file containing JSON data. This is a reasonable export option and puts Grok ahead of where it was when the platform first launched. For users who want a backup of their AI interactions, this works.
Memory is viewable and manageable. Since Grok now has persistent memory, you can see exactly what it has stored about you and delete individual memories. This transparency is a strength. You are not guessing what the AI knows. You can review it and remove anything you do not want retained.
No import tools from other platforms yet. If you are coming from ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini and want to bring your conversation history or memory data into Grok, there is currently no public way to do that. xAI has been testing an import feature, but for now, switching to Grok requires building your memory from scratch.

Which approach is better?
Grok is a capable conversational AI with real strengths. It is fast, direct, and its real time information access through X gives it a unique edge.
