
Today, Meta launched Muse, its new personal AI agent. Muse can send emails, book travel, make purchases, manage schedules, and take actions across connected services. It is designed to remember personal preferences and proactively suggest things rather than simply waiting for a prompt.
Meta is not the first company to build an AI agent. OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Perplexity and others have already been moving AI from answering questions toward completing tasks.
But Meta's entrance is significant because of where it wants these agents to live: inside the everyday social and digital lives of billions of people.
A few weeks ago, we wrote about the rise of AI companions and a question that was becoming increasingly difficult to ignore:
What happens to human connection when AI becomes very good at companionship?
The question has only become more relevant.
AI is no longer just learning to talk to us. It is learning how to act for us.
And that raises a bigger question:
If AI can increasingly understand us, anticipate us, and act for us, what happens to the people around us?
The AI that knows exactly what you want
Imagine an AI that knows your preferences. It knows what you like to eat, where you like to travel, what you're working on, what you have been talking about, what you bought last week, and what you have been searching for.
Now give that AI the ability to act.
It can book the restaurant. Buy the ticket. Schedule the meeting. Plan the trip. Send the email. Remind you about the thing you forgot.
The friction of everyday life starts disappearing. It is also a profound change in how we interact with technology.
For decades, software waited for instructions. AI agents increasingly anticipate them. And the better they become at anticipating us, the more personalized our digital lives become.
There is an obvious benefit to this. But there is also a less obvious risk.
When AI becomes the easiest relationship
AI companions have already shown us how compelling personalization can be.
An AI is available whenever you want it. It remembers what you said. It doesn't get tired. It doesn't interrupt. It doesn't have a bad day. And it can respond in exactly the way you want.
In a series of experiments involving nearly 2,000 people, researchers found that people who chose AI for emotional support tended to rate that support highly. But more importantly, a 28-day study involving 981 participants found that personal conversations with AI shifted preferences toward AI and away from humans.
That doesn't mean AI companionship is inherently bad, but something more subtle may be happening.
The more comfortable an interaction becomes, the easier it can be to choose it again.
Human relationships don't work that way. People are unpredictable. They misunderstand us. They disagree with us. They cancel plans. They need something from us when we need something from them. Sometimes a conversation is awkward. Sometimes it is wonderful. And sometimes you meet someone you never expected to meet.
That unpredictability is part of what makes human connection meaningful.
The paradox of personalization
There is a strange paradox emerging in the AI era. The better technology gets at understanding the individual, the easier it becomes to build a world optimized entirely around that individual.
Your own recommendations. Your own content. Your own AI. Your own preferences. Your own digital environment.
Everything becomes increasingly personalized.
But humans don't become more interesting when the world becomes perfectly personalized around us.
We become more interesting when we encounter things we didn't expect.
A person with a different perspective. A friend who introduces you to something you would never have searched for. A conversation that changes your mind. A stranger who turns into a collaborator. Someone who doesn't fit neatly into your algorithm. Those experiences are difficult to optimize. And that may be exactly why they matter.
What if AI's job isn't to replace connection, but to create it?
Think about how much of your identity is already scattered across your digital life.
The things you read. The places you go. The music you listen to. The projects you work on. The hobbies you have. The things you are curious about. The kinds of conversations you enjoy.
But none of that necessarily helps you discover the people around you who share those interests.
You may live in a city with millions of people and still have no idea who you should actually meet.
Your existing social graph tells you who you already know. Algorithms tell you what will keep you engaged. But there is a missing layer:
people you haven't met yet.
From recommendation to discovery
Imagine an AI that understands your interests and context well enough to say: You might enjoy meeting this person.
Not because they have the most followers. Not because you both swiped right. Not because an engagement algorithm predicts you will spend more time in the app.
But because there is something real you have in common. Maybe you are both building companies. Maybe you both love obscure sci-fi novels. Maybe you just moved to the same city. Maybe you are both looking for people to play tennis with. Maybe you have completely different backgrounds but happen to be interested in the same problem.
The AI doesn't need to become your friend.
It can help you find one.
That changes the role of AI. AI doesn't have to be the destination. It can be the bridge. It can remember what matters to you. Understand what you are looking for. Reduce the friction of discovery. And then get out of the way.
Because the most valuable thing that happens after an AI recommendation may have nothing to do with AI.
It might be a coffee. A conversation. A new friendship. A business idea. A collaboration. A date. A community. A person who wasn't part of your life yesterday.
AI can know you.
But perhaps the most valuable thing it can do with that knowledge is help you find your people.
And that may be the future of personal AI we are most excited about.
